CONTACT: Dr. Kimberly Kennard Professor of Human Services (209) 575-6864 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release MJC to showcase Human Services Programs to students and community (Modesto, CA) – The Human Services Program at Modesto Junior College is sponsoring a Spring 2014 Orientation on Thursday, January 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Forum Building, room 110, on East Campus, located at 435 College Avenue. The public is invited to participate in this free event. The event showcases the degrees, certificates of achievement, and skills recognition awards available to students in human services, chemical dependency counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, and gerontology. MJC is the only community college in Stanislaus County with a Chemical Dependency Counseling Program that meets the educational requirements necessary to take California’s Department of Alcohol and Drug Program’s (ADP) state licensing exam. Additionally, the nine-unit Skills Recognition Award in Psychosocial Rehabilitation allows students to become eligible to sit for the state exam to become certified as psychosocial rehabilitation practitioners. Several local human services organizations will also participate in the Spring 2014 Orientation at MJC. Representatives from Stanislaus County, behavioral health care, chemical dependency counseling, children and family services as well as many other interrelated fields will provide information about volunteer or internship opportunities, and the services that they provide for individuals, families, groups and the community at large. This spring semester, courses in real estate and office administration will be offered which enable students to obtain a certificate in one semester. Individuals interested in obtaining a California Real Estate Salesperson License must complete three courses to sit the exam: Real Estate Principles (RLES 380), Real Estate Practice (RLES 381) and one other real estate course. MJC is offering the following three courses in the spring semester to satisfy these requirements and enable students to sit the state exam in May 2014: · RLES 380: Real Estate Principles –offered Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9:35 p.m. in Founders Hall 251 · RLES 381: Real Estate Practices – offered Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:35 p.m. in Pirates Village 104 · RLES 384: Real Estate Finance – offered Wednesday evenings from 6:30 -9:35 p.m. in Founders Hall 154 In the program area of office administration, all courses needed to satisfy the Records Management/Data Entry Specialist Certificate at MJC will be offered the spring 2014 semester. Students will have the opportunity to complete all courses (16 units) during the 16-week spring term. These courses provide entry-level job skills in the areas of records management/filing and data entry for such positions as filing clerks, records clerks, and data-entry operators. The courses are offered in online, hybrid and live format in the MJC Office Administration Center on East Campus. The 16-team tournament will be held December 3 through December 7 in the MJC Gymnasium on East Campus. In addition to MJC’s Men’s Basketball Team, community colleges sending teams to the 2013 tournament are Cosumnes River, Reedley, Shasta, Chabot, Contra Costa, Mendocino, Merced, Yuba, Columbia, Sacramento, Lassen, Fresno City, DeAnza, Cuesta and Siskiyous. This year’s tournament, sponsored by Grower Direct Nut Company and the Associated Students of Modesto Junior College (ASMJC), features special activities and promotions each of the five nights. · Tuesday, Dec. 3 is Pack the House Night. MJC students get in free when they bring a flyer being handed out by campus clubs. Games are at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. · Wednesday, Dec. 4 is Veterans Night. Veterans get in free when they show their veteran I.D. card. Games are at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. · Thursday, Dec. 5 is Family Night. Admission for any student at any level is only $1. Games are at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. · Friday, Dec. 6 is Legends Night, honoring all former MJC basketball players. Senior citizens will get in for only $1. Games are at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. · Saturday, Dec. 6 is Youth Sports Night. All youth wearing their team jersey will be able to attend for $1. Games are at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. There will be prize drawings every night and over 200 Pirate “bam-bams” given out during the course of the tournament. Buffalo Wild Wings will host a “Blazing Hot Wings” eating contest during half-time each night. CONTACT: Julie Haynes Vet Tech and Equine Science Department Modesto Junior College (209) 575-6872 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release MJC offers Equine Open House on December 7 (Modesto, CA)—Modesto Junior College invites the public to the Equine Open House on Saturday, December 7, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the West Campus Equine Unit. There is no admission charged and campus parking is free. Students will be demonstrating techniques and answering questions about what they have been doing with the horses in the Introduction To Colt Training course this fall semester. Most demonstrations will begin around 9 a.m. All of the horses are for sale with the proceeds going directly to the program. “You do not need to be interested in buying a horse to come out,” notes Julie Haynes, professor of equine science and director of the veterinary technician program. “We really hope that people with an interest in horses will come out just to learn more about the program as well as meet the students. The program was a huge success this semester, thanks to the many donations we received following the theft of equipment that occurred last summer. Contact: Professor Anne Martin Director of Orchestra (209) 575-6646 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release 30th anniversary of “Return of the Jedi” celebrated at MJC Community Orchestra Concert (Modesto, CA) –The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra, directed by Professor Anne Martin, will present a concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars film “Return of the Jedi” on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Auditorium on East campus. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 general admission and $1 for students and senior citizens. Storm troopers from the Central California Garrison, a division of the 501st Legion, will make an appearance at the concert. The 501st Legion is a volunteer, non-profit, Star Wars costuming group whose members visit children’s hospitals and charitable organizations, as well as Community Orchestra concerts! The concert will open with Wagner’s dramatic Kaiser March written to honor German victories against the French in 1870. Wagner uses a musical quotation from the famous hymnA Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and his work uses the full forces of a romantic orchestra. In contrast, the group will then present the English Coventry Carol, composed in the 16thcentury. Orchestra members Christine Carr on oboe, Bob Scott on clarinet, Jeff Broumas on French horn and Ashley Burrows on bassoon will be featured as soloists in Mozart’s elegantSinfonia Concertante. The brass section will open the second half of the concert with a rousing Fanfare from the ballet La Peri by Paul Dukas. The concert will conclude with an energetic rendition of the famous Star Wars Imperial March and a medley from “Return of the Jedi”. Contact: David Dow Electronic Music Studio Director [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release Voltage Villains – Electronic Music Concert presented at MJC (Modesto, CA) – The Modesto Junior College Department of Music presents Voltage Villains – Electronic Music Concert on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall on East Campus, 435 College Avenue. The concert will feature original electronic music compositions created by student composers from the MJC Advanced Electronic Music Class. The featured composers include William Bowerman, Juan Jimenez, Miguel Rodriguez and Ricardo Torres. The MJC Electronic Music Studio Director, David Dow, will also perform an original electronic music composition during the program. The music will be created using synthesizers, computer-controlled synthesizers, samplers and digital effects. Some of the compositions will be performed live while others will be pre-recorded performances. Special lighting effects, video displays and slides will accompany the compositions. The Electronic Music Concert is open to the public and admission is free. Contact: Richard Serros Professor of Art (209) 575-6071 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release MJC presents Scholastic Inspiration: Area High School Art Teachers Exhibition (Modesto, CA) –The Modesto Junior College Visual Arts Club presents Scholastic Inspiration: Area High School Art Teachers Exhibition on display now through December 5 in the MJC Art Gallery on East Campus, 435 College Avenue. The show is free and the Gallery is open Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A reception with the artists will be held on Thursday, November 21, 5 to 8 p.m. at the Gallery. Attending artists will be introduced at 5:30 p.m. and refreshments will be available. The multimedia exhibition showcases the artwork of 19 high school art teachers from the Stanislaus County area. The show features drawings, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, installations and photographs. “Many remember their first-time encounter with art through their high school art teachers,” said Richard Serros, MJC professor of art. “This project was inspired by the MJC art students and continues this year’s theme of celebrating MJC’s history and connection to our community. We thought it was important to show how our local teachers have influenced and inspired many of our students here at MJC.” Artists included in the exhibition are Ann Williams-Bailey, Charles Alba, Christine Pugliese, Debra Amarante, Demetrio Cordero, Gabie Layne, Kari Copely, Larry DeTomasi, Liana Scoto, Mark Hammari, Nancy Kern, Omar Salinas, Rebecca Fuentes, Renee Stearns, Ruth Truesdell, Scott Mitchell, Terri Crivelli, Tim Tanis, and Vicky Boese. “Many of the teachers’ artworks were inspired by their personal mentors when they were students themselves,” said Serros. “It is our hope that while you walk through this exhibit you reminisce about who inspired you when you first experienced art.” For more information contact the MJC Art Gallery at 575-6819. -MJC- November 13, 2013
